Mastricht: Gerhard von M. comes from the S'Coning family in Mastricht, who fled to Cologne during the persecution of the Protestants in the Netherlands. His grandfather Cornelius had already taken the name "Mastricht"; his son Thomas, preacher of the Reformed congregation, married the daughter of the mayor of Ath, Johanna le Plancq. Gerhard was born on September 26, 1639, earned his doctorate in Basel in 1665 with the diss. de adulteriis , which was later to be developed into a work de Venere damnata , and went to Duisburg as a professor in 1669. In 1688 he accepted a call as syndic to the magistrate in Bremen and proved his zeal for the best interests of this city by conscientiously and skillfully carrying out various assignments given to him, which took him to foreign courts. His academic work was on canon law and theology. Even today, his "Historia jur. eccles. et pontificii," Duisb. 1676, Amstel. 1686, Hal. 1705—1719 (also in Opera Ant. Augustini, Lucae t. III) , as well as "Ant. Augustini de emendatione Gratiani cum orat. Schotti de vita et scriptis auctoris," Duisb. 1676, which are on the Indian side, are still considered important for literary history. After the premature death of his son Peter, he sold his valuable library. He had a catalogue of it printed in Bremen in 1719. He died at a very old age on January 22, 1721.
