Wreck of HMS THETIS; Built in 1817, Pembroke Dock. On 4th December 1830 HMS THETIS (Capt. Samuel BURGESS) left Rio de Janeiro to England with bullion, including 800.000 dollars, which had been collected from merchants at Callao and other Pacific ports over the previous months. Shorthly after, at Cape Frio, she struck a rock with force. In the event, all three masts came down. When an attempt was made to free her from the rock, she struck another rock that holed her hull and started drifting. She finally came to rest near a cove. In all twenty-eight lost their lives.
